Sage Fruit Company will be a sponsoring Racing for a Cause in their efforts to create awareness of eosinophil associated diseases for the remainder of 2011.

“Sage Fruit is very excited to team up with the Racing for a Cause campaign this year. We are proud of Ricky and his efforts to use his platform for awareness of eosinophil associated diseases,” said Social Media Director Natasha Johnson. “At Sage Fruit we strive to provide the community opportunities for healthy options not only through our high quality fruit but also with our Kids in Force program. We created the program in 2010 in efforts to educate kids on making healthier eating decisions and participating in more physical activities. We feel Ricky holds similar goals with education and wanting others to have a happy, healthy life. It is our goal this year in teaming up with Ricky and Racing for a Cause to bring more awareness to his campaign and help raise funds for APFED.”

Racing for a Cause was founded in 2009 by then 7 year old Ricky Springer. Ricky, who was born with an Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorder called Eosinophilic Colitis, suffered for the first 21 months of his life, seeing 18 different doctors who were unable to diagnose his illness, due to the lack of awareness in the medical community about these diseases. Thanks to the assistance provided by APFED, Ricky's parents were able to locate a physician who was finally able to provide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Because of Ricky’s battle to obtain a diagnosis and treatment, in 2009 he decided to do something to make a difference for others who are still suffering. As a dirt track go-kart racer, Ricky began using his racing as a platform to educate others and raise money to support APFED. In 2010 the campaign grew larger than ever expected, with Ricky traveling throughout the Eastern US, making appearances with his go-kart to educate others. Other racers around the country, as well as racers from British Columbia and Australia, have joined Ricky and helped to establish the Racing for a Cause Team, all promoting the campaign by running with the Racing for a Cause logo on their cars and educating those in their own communities.

To date the campaign has educated over 3 Million people about eosinophil associated disorders. It is Ricky's goal that "NO ONE should suffer and live in pain like I did".

Sage Fruit Company is considered one of the premier grower-shippers in the world for apples, pears, and cherries. Their mission is to deliver the highest quality fruit and foster long term relationships with their customers, employees, and growers. Sage Fruit is proud to deliver some of the world’s most healthy foods from one of the world’s most fertile growing regions in order to provide “An Exceptional Eating Experience”.

For more information on Racing for a Cause, please visit www.racingforacause.com

For more information on Sage Fruit Company, please visit www.sagefruit.com

For more information on APFED and eosinophil associated disorders, please visit www.apfed.org

American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED) is a 501(c) organization dedicated to patients and their families coping with eosinophilic disorders. Driver Make
1.  Kasey Kahne  Toyota
2.  Ron Hornaday  Chevrolet
3.  Todd Bodine  Toyota
4.  Matt Crafton  Chevrolet
5.      James Buescher  Chevrolet

The victory made Kahne the first driver in the Truck Series to win three of his first four starts.
Second alongside Elliott Sadler on a restart with 53 laps to go, Kahne immediately dispatched of Sadler -- who had taken two tires under the previous caution -- and never trailed again.
Kahne held on through three more restarts, including a final one with three laps to go, to take the checkered flag ahead of four-time series champion Ron Hornaday Jr. and 2010 Darlington winner Todd Bodine. Matt Crafton and James Buescher completed the top five.
Kahne's stiffest challenge over the final laps came from Bodine, who once moved alongside before getting loose and falling into the clutches of Hornaday.
"I gave it a shot and got sucked around and got loose and all that and finished third," Bodine said.
Kahne, a full-time driver in the Sprint Cup Series since 2004, scored Truck wins at Darlington and Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2004 and finished second last year at Pocono Raceway.
Saturday marked Kahne's second appearance in the Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota normally driven by team owner Kyle Busch, who was vacationing in Cancun.
"This is one of my favorite race tracks," said Kahne, who qualified second and led four times for 95 of the 147 laps. "I'm really glad I came. I really enjoy driving this thing."
Matt Crafton remained the series leader, stretching his advantage to six points on rookie Cole Whitt, who moved into second after three races. Whitt finished an impressive eighth after starting from the pole and leading twice for 30 laps before dropping back with a pit-road mistake and engine issue.
Whitt, 19, was making his fourth career Truck Series start, his first at Darlington.
"The track just kind of suited my driving style, and from the get-go we just kind of fell into the rhythm," Whitt said.
The race was slowed by 10 cautions, including one for a three-truck wreck involving Johanna Long, Ricky Carmichael and Nelson Piquet Jr. that brought out the red flag for 7 minutes, 37 seconds.
Notes: Kahne's margin of victory was 1.116 seconds. ... Kahne, who started second, became the fourth winner to start inside the top five. Bodine started eighth last year, and Bobby Hamilton started 14th when he won in 2003. ... Kahne's three wins tie Rich Bickle, Andy Houston and Dave Rezendes for 27th on the all-time win list.

Follow Friday on Twitter!

Do you follow us on Twitter? School programing has struggled with funding for Health Education and after school activities leaving our children without healthy options. Through Kids in Force, we hope to educate and get our children involved in making healthy eating decisions as well as encouraging them to play and get physical activity each day.

The Kids in Force program is a free service to our community. Parents can find resources and tools on the Sage Fruit website about health and nutrition. Our website has a special section for kids to interact and learn with various downloadable activities like coloring sheets, connect the dots and games. These activities have been created to help educate our youth on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Given the alarming increase in childhood obesity and diabetes, we must make changes now to promote health and chronic disease prevention as adults.

To learn more about the program and to download the official Kids in Force points sheet, visit our website at www.sagefruit.com or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sagefruit.

Our kids are our future! The Kids in Force program rewards kids for making healthier decisions like eating more vegetables and fruit as well as choosing to participate in more sports and physical activity.

Facebook Contest

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 198px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JbswTG4DGP8/TREYs7zvkxI/AAAAAAAAAFU/d7E4fn4t_SQ/s320/Sage_LogoNEW.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5553246975772562194" />
From now until December 31st, anytime you tag Sage Fruit in your Facebook Status, you'll be entered into our drawing for a Sage hat! Take your basket and fill the bottom with shiny foil shreds to add volume to the basket.

2. Start placing a variety of apples in the basket, arrange so a mixture of size and color is noticeable. Place enough in the basket to fill it up.

3. Take larger apples and place them on top of the other fruit so that your basket can display the fruit, creating a fuller look. Also, add some Sage Fruit pears!

4. Take your various decorations and start placing them in and on the basket. Take floral arrangements and place them in one corner of the basket. Add colorful ribbon to wrap the basket or any basket handles. You can also attach an ornament or bow to the front of the basket. Arrange to your liking.

5.Take the wreathe and wrap it with the lighting set much like what you would do with a Christmas tree. Place the batteries inside the lighting box and turn on. Your wreathe should now light up adding a nice glow to your centerpiece.

6. Attach any decorations to the wreathe.

7. Place the wreathe around the basket of apples so that it sits at the base of the basket.

8. Place the entire centerpiece on your holiday dinner table or anywhere you like for a simple holiday decoration.

Happy Holidays!

12 Days of Christmas!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 256px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JbswTG4DGP8/TQftb79CDwI/AAAAAAAAAFE/soXwW1XVEhU/s320/holidaypic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550666129963355906" />

Happy Holidays from all of us at Sage Fruit! If your olive has a pimiento you can pull it out the back of the olive and let it hang so that it looks like a turkey wattle.

Credit: Food.com

Sage Fruit October Contest!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JbswTG4DGP8/TKzizhmxrrI/AAAAAAAAAEs/B5v64HHZ2_A/s320/octobercontest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525040217698971314" />
Would you like Pit Pass vouchers to the World Finals? In the past ten years there has been increasing evidence of the importance of adequate potassium intake in reducing the risk for hypertension and stroke (He, 2003). More than half of all American adults have high blood pressure. A diet high in potassium and calcium, and low in sodium and alcohol, is a reasonable and safe approach to promote healthy blood pressure.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland that in addition to antioxidant activity also plays a role in promoting healthy circadian rhythm and thus promoting healthy sleep patterns. Cherries are one plant food source of melatonin. In one study, melatonin supplementation appeared to be effective in reducing jet lag (Herxheimer, 2002; Suhner, 2001). In combination with other behavioral approaches to promote sleep or reduce jet lag, sweet cherry intake in usual amounts could prove to be useful.

For more info on our delicious cherries, please visit www.nwcherries.com!

Summer Vacation Tips from the Trainer

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 250px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JbswTG4DGP8/S8c6FmICawI/AAAAAAAAADw/wa7sT2_4hAw/s320/big-island-beach.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460396941018032898" />

Cool Ocean breeze, sands in between your toes, delicious treats being sipped through a straw in a coconut...This is you on your Summer Vacation, one you greatly deserve! The reason there's no guilt in indulging in your favorite vacation spot is because...In April you decided to make healthy food choices and turned up your gym workouts so that you could expose plenty of skin for a nice beach tan. Maybe you haven't started yet? No problem! Here's a few tips and exercises to get you started and on your way to that dream vacation!

Start little by little. Even going to gym 2-3 days a week will start a healthy habit and have you craving more. 3-5 days of exercise will have you feeling and looking your best in no time!Exercise not only does wonders on your body shape, it helps improve mood and lessens your risk for health related diseases like Heart Disease.

For starters try this:

Find an activity you enjoy. Walking, running, elliptical machine. Try for 30 minutes of cardio 2 or 3 nights this week. They don't have to be back to back. Maybe take a nice walk after dinner with a special someone or roommate. On days you are not doing cardio, try 1 or 2 days of weight training. If you are starting out, do 2 sets of 10 reps of an exercise.

For those arms: Do each for count of 10 (reps) two times (set)
Bicep Curls
Tricep French Press
Dumbbell Shoulder Press
To really burn calories and save time, combine these exercise with squats and lunges at the same time.

The general idea is to get moving. Once you start to feel the benefits you'll want to keep it up. Even a few push-ups, squats, and lunges here and there can help motivate you to keep moving! And they don't require any equipment at all!

Now don't waste those burned calories on chocolate cake right after, you'll be defeating yourself. Apples are great with fiber, Cherries can help with post-workout soreness, and Pears are simply delicious! Sage Fruit offers recipes on their Facebook and Myspace if you are lost on dinner ideas.

Work Hard, Play Hard!

From the Trainer

It's almost swimsuit season! Spring is here and Summer is right around the corner. That means days by the pool and time out on the lake or beach for Memorial Day or the 4th of July. Luckily, there's still time to get in shape for your favorite Summer activities.

As a certified personal trainer and competitor at heart, I know it takes more than just exercise to achieve your desired fitness goals. Yes, it's that nasty word, DIET. But we aren't really talking about a diet here, more of a lifestyle that will give you the most energy and have you feeling your best each and every day. One way to do that is make sure you get plenty of vegetables, lean protein, fruits, and WATER into your eating plan. Here's today's tip:

Tired after a long day at work or the kids have you running in circles? Before hitting the gym refuel yourself with a snack. Try an energy enhancing snack like this Cherry Trail Mix.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 221px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JbswTG4DGP8/S7zx1UBnmBI/AAAAAAAAADo/UAM5lz4gJ24/s320/cherrytrailmix.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457502746677057554" />

Adding fruit and nuts like Almonds into a pre-workout snack will help give you that energy for the treadmill or any other activity. Also, consuming cherries may help muscle pain. Researchers believe cherries’ post-exercise benefits are likely because of the fruit’s natural anti-inflammation properties – attributed to antioxidant compounds called anthocyanins, which also give cherries their bright red color.

So next time you go to pump some iron, try a handful of Cherry Trail Mix! Sage Fruit fresh Bing & other variety Cherries will be available in June and July! Perfect for keeping you in swimsuit shape!

And don't forget to hydrate yourself with lots of Water!

Apple: The New Superfruit!

Health & Wellness
Apples: The Next Superfruit www.supermarketguru.com

After today, America will no longer connect apples primarily with wholesome activities like picking bushels amid a spectrum of leaves in the fall, warming up with cider on a wintry day, or crunching a candied variety at Halloween.

People will think of apples as the next superfruit, an accessible, value-priced, nutritional energy source on par with blueberries and pomegranates. That’s the logical outcome of a new national survey of 1,021 chief household shoppers across the nation conducted for the U.S. Apple Association by SupermarketGuru.com, in which:
• 96% called apples an ‘anytime’ food for both adults and children
• 90% said they would consider apples and apple products (slices, cider, not pastries) a regular part of their healthier diet in 2010
• 64% rated apples a one, two or three on a ‘most healthful’ scale of ten, with one being the highest rating

Moreover, when asked about the health attributes of apples and apples products, similarly high proportions of respondents were aware of the truth behind these scientifically supported statements:
• Apples and apple products, especially those with the peel left intact, are rich in plant compounds called polyphenols and antioxidants, both known to promote health (92%).
• Apples and apple products may help to boost weight loss efforts (89%).
• Daily consumption of apples and apple products can help reduce LDL (low-density lipoprotein) or “bad” cholesterol levels and protect against heart disease (85%).

One result of this understanding: vast majorities said they will serve apples to their families and house guests more often. “The magnitude of their response reflects their desire to eat healthfully—and the ability of apples to help them do that because of their nutritional makeup, portability, affordability ad accessibility,” said The Lempert Report’s own Phil Lempert, a food, consumer and marketing trends analyst.

He considered the comparably high nutrition ratings of apples in the survey to be notable, since blueberries and pomegranates are higher-priced food options. Consumers were asked between December 2009 and February 2010 about the nutrition, health, merchandising influences, eating habits and more surrounding apples..

It became clear to Lempert, after evaluating the survey findings, that “apples are a year-round fruit, and consumer willingness to buy, eat and serve more apples is a vast opportunity for retailers. Merchants already display apples prominently as a stage-setter, but now they need to think further about how to tap into this mindset that apples are a ‘superfruit’ and great for a person’s health and overall wellness.”

Cherry Season and Cherry Health!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JbswTG4DGP8/S7YYCffGLiI/AAAAAAAAADg/-Y3PCXfYAbE/s320/DSC01187.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455574429696667170" />

Health and Nutrition
Cherries.
The New Antioxidant "Super Fruit"

Cherries are not only good for you, but they’re also on trend as a homegrown “Super Fruit.”
According to recent data, more than 9 out of 10 Americans want to know where their food comes from, nearly 80 percent say they’re purchasing “locally produced” products, and the majority is defining “local” as grown in America. And cherries deliver.

A growing body of science reveals tart cherries, enjoyed as either dried, frozen cherries or cherry juice, have among the highest levels of disease-fighting antioxidants, when compared to other fruits. They also contain other important nutrients such as beta carotene (19 times more than blueberries or strawberries) vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, iron, fiber and folate.

Emerging evidence links cherries to many important health benefits – from helping to ease the pain of arthritis and gout, to reducing risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Cherries also contain melatonin, which has been found to help regulate the body’s natural sleep patterns, aid with jet lag, prevent memory loss and delay the aging process.

A recent study from the University of Michigan reveals new evidence linking cherries to heart health benefits. The study found that a cherry-enriched diet lowered total weight, body fat (especially the important “belly” fat), inflammation and cholesterol-all risk factors associated with heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, being overweight or obese, in particular when the weight is concentrated in the middle, is a major risk factor for heart disease. As nearly two out of three Americans are overweight, emerging studies like this are important in examining the role diet may play in disease management and prevention.

While there’s no established guideline yet on how many cherries it takes to reap the benefits, experts suggest that 1-2 servings of cherries daily can help provide some of the health benefits identified in the research. Serve warm.

Torta Di Mele – Tuscan Apple Cake

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JbswTG4DGP8/S6EJRdG9YuI/AAAAAAAAABc/bYz56nm9nig/s320/Recipe+Italian+Cake.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449647219571253986" />
Torta Di Mele – Tuscan Apple Cake
Sage Fruit Company/Adrienne Meier

This is an authentic recipe from Tuscany! Sprinkle the slices with the juice of one lemon and toss gently to prevent the slices from turning brown.
In a medium bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, eggs, butter and milk, blending well. Fold apple slices into batter.
Pour batter into a buttered 10inch-baking pan. Bake in 350-degree oven for 60 minutes. Check doneness with toothpick. Dust top of cooled cake with powdered sugar and garnish with fresh sliced apples and a sprig of rosemary. Use two knives to cut butter into the flour/sugar mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of water and mix with fingers until dough comes together. Turn onto a floured surface and gather into a ball (knead lightly if necessary). Flatten ball slightly and refrigerate in plastic wrap for 15 minutes. On a lightly floured board, roll the pastry out to a 14-inch circle. Line a greased 8-inch tart pan (removable bottom) with the rolled out dough, leaving the extra pastry to hang over the edge (don’t worry if the dough cracks or breaks, it’s ok to pinch it back together). Set pastry lined tart pan aside.

Ingredients for Apple Filling:
6 peeled, cored and sliced Granny Smith Apples
2 cups apple juice
1-teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1-cup sugar
¼ cup cornstarch
¾ cup cold water

In large saucepan over medium high heat combine apples, apple juice, sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Cook until mixture comes to a boil, reduce heat to simmer and cook until apples are just tender. Remove apples with slotted spoon and set apples aside. In a small bowl, mix cold water and cornstarch together until cornstarch dissolves. Bring apple juice mixture back to a boil and add cornstarch mixture. Stir until apple juice mixture becomes thick and glossy. Add cooked apples back to thickened apple juice and toss apples until well combined. Set apple mixture aside to cool.

Fill tart crust with apple filling. Fold the overhanging pastry roughly over the fruit and sprinkle with two tablespoons of sugar. Bake tart for 40 minutes or until crust is golden. When cool remove sides of tart pan and dust with sifted powdered sugar. Serve warm or cold.

Minted Spring Mix, Dark Sweet Cherries & Cantaloupe Salad

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JbswTG4DGP8/S6EH0W52IlI/AAAAAAAAABE/8HsSIwAQNJc/s320/Recipe+Spring+mix.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449645620177805906" />
Minted Spring Mix, Dark Sweet Cherries & Cantaloupe Salad
With Minted Dark Sweet Cherry Vinaigrette
Sage Fruit Company/Adrienne Meier

So refreshing with just a hint of mint!

Makes 4 servings

2 cups pitted and halved Dark Sweet Cherries
1 5oz bag of Spring Mix (mixed greens)
2 cups of cubed cantaloupe
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint

Evenly divide the Spring Mix between four salad plates. Set aside.
In large glass bowl or trifle bowl, layer 13 of the pound cake slices in a single layer at the bottom of the bowl. Drizzle pound cake slices with ¼ cup cran-cherry juice. Spread ½ the pudding mixture on top of the pound cake and layer half of the cut cherries on top of the pudding mixture. Spread 2 cups of the cool whip on top of the cut cherries and repeat layers by layering the rest of the pound cake on top of the cool whip, sprinkling the pound cake with the rest of the cran-cherry juice and layer the rest of the pudding on top of the pound cake. Layer the rest of the halved cherries on top of the pudding layer and top with 2 cups of cool whip. Garnish the top of the trifle with fresh whole Rainier Cherries and sprinkle with toasted almonds.
